Dr. Skinkis' research program focuses on whole plant physiology studies on vine vegetative vigor management, physiology of vine balance, and vineyard management impacts on fruit composition and wine quality. Her research also includes work on yield management, fine-tuning canopy management methods, fruitfulness, sustainable viticulture production, and understanding production factors that drive implementation of vineyard management practices. As Extension Specialist, Patty develops educational programs and informational publications for the Oregon industry statewide. Some of her outreach efforts include bringing industry members together in technical groups to allow information exchange between university and industry on new research results and innovations.

Biography

I am the statewide Viticulture Extension Specialist and Professor in the Horticulture Department at OSU. As an Extension Specialist, I spend the majority of my time developing and delivering research information and educational outreach materials for the commercial wine grape industry in Oregon. As part of my viticulture program, I conduct applied research that impacts the commercial wine grape industry and contributes to the broader knowledge of viticulture and grapevine physiology. I also teach one upper-division vineyard production course in the Department of Horticulture. I train both undergraduate and graduate students through my viticulture lab.

(2018) Patricia Skinkis, Viticulturist Patty Skinkis is a viticulture Extension Specialist and a core researcher with the Oregon Wine Research Institute, based at Oregon State University. Her research focuses on how yield affects quality. It starts in the lab, with examining the buds, and continues into the field, with testing various amounts of thinning, and then to evaluating the quality of the wine.
